A Taste of Tango

This local version of ‘dinner & dancing’ makes a great counterpart to the traditional tango dinner show (which is also a fabulous night out!)

This 3-4 hour evening tour starts wth a pickup around 8pm, depending on the day. We’ll then make our way to one of the city’s many ‘cafe notables’ (historical cafe/bar) . Here we’ll enjoy some traditional Argentine fare, including:

• Picada (ie, charcuterie - all the cafe notables have a wide variety of plates to choose from)

• Tortilla (originally an import of the Spanish immigrants, this version of the frittata is now a local staple)

• Perhaps a glass of the country’s most famous export - Malbec.

While enjoying all the tastes, you’ll learn the history & culture of tango:

• from its beginnings when early Eurpoean immigrants brought their music & dance here to merge with the local folk styles

• its peak in the 40s when tango orchestras played throughout the continent as far as Hollywood

• being forced to go underground in the late 70’s due to political repression

• its current incarnation, a blend of traditonal & ‘nuevo’ styles, as dancers from abroad now influence Argentina’s signature dance

Then we’re off to a nearby Milonga (tango dance hall) where we can relax comfortably & enjoy the scene. The dance is just one aspect of tango culture, albeit an extremely beautiful one. The music, the culture, & the social etiquette are all fascinating to experience while inside the milonga. We’ll do our best to take you to where there is also a show - either a live orquestra or a short tango dance performance. Please keep in mind that these shows often don’t start until 11pm or later.

Beverages at the milonga are included in the price.
